Police hunt valuable stolen barometer
07.06.11
AN antique barometer worth thousands of pounds has been stolen from a home near Ripon.
Detectives are searching for the distinctive 220-year-old stick barometer, which is valued at £30,000.
It stands at 40 inches tall and is crafted out of mahogany. It also has a contrasting silvered brass face.
The weatherpiece is an early example of the work of John Russell who was made watchmaker to His Royal Highness Prince George, The Prince Regent, in 1811.
The burglary happened between 10pm on Monday, May 23, and 1pm on Tuesday, May 24, from a cottage in West Tanfiled, near Ripon.
Det Con Karl Middlemiss, of Northallerton CID, said he would like to hear from anyone who has been offered the piece.
“I am particularly interested in hearing from anyone in the antiques trade who may have been offered the item,” he said.
Anyone with any information about the theft or location of the barometer should contact DC Middlemiss or DS Angela Went at Northallerton police station on 0845 6060247 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
