Just bought a Foodsaver 8640 and it works great with 11 inch wide bags, but won't vacuum out 8 inch bags...?

When using the 8 inch wide bags (I've tried making my own from a roll and using the pre-made Foodsaver bags), there is still quite a bit of air left in the bag. It starts the vacuum pump, and then almost immediately thinks it's done and wants to start

The "...tried making my own from a roll..." is probably the reason it's not working properly, especially if you're sure the seals are holding properly.

What I suspect is that the "home-brew" bag material of your "own"

What would be a less ill investment/solution for freezing food: a Foodsaver vacuum sealer with a nozzle, or the flat one?

I own a version of the second one. Mine is flat just like that one and I love it. I use it to seal everything from meats, vegetables to ginger root. I love it because it has a "moist" and "dry" settings option as to not crush delicate

My sister uses the vacuum type. She really loves it. Her husband is a hunter and they have lots of deer meat to put in the freezer. She wouldn't be without it. Hope this helps.
