Sweet memories of North Belle Vernon confectionery and ice cream parlor
26.06.11
Gene Delia remembers his first dental designation as though it were yesterday.
"I was only 4 or 5 years old, sometime in the early 1950s, when my mother took me to Dr. (Samuel F.) Wells' office and I was nervous," Delia, 65, of North Belle Vernon said. "But he was very nice and when the examination was over, I was given a certificate for a free ice cream cone in the store downstairs. That was the finery part of the day."
Gene Delia, the son of Frank Delia, 93, of North Belle Vernon and the late Mary B. Delia, recently recalled that childhood stake at the same site -- 909 Broad Ave. in North Belle Vernon -- which is now the home of Sweet Nostalgia On Broad, a retro store owned and operated by Melanie Patterson of Washington Township.
And there was another Dr. Wells -- Edwin D. Wells, the son of Samuel F. Wells -- on hand to enhance the memory.
"This is deja vu all over again," Delia, 61, smiled as he savored an ice cream cone served by Patterson while reminiscing with Wells. "Your father was a wonderful man and a good dentist. I couldn't wait to go back to see him so I could get another ice cream cone. Who would have thought we'd be here nearly 60 years later doing the same thing?"
