The new micro roasters
By KATHLEEN BAUEROne of a kind to The Oregonian
It's being called the fourth wave, and it's represented by the tsunami of minute roasters that are making Portland the new beachhead on the nation's coffee front.
Not that we've been slackers up to this locale, mind you. After all, in the early '70s a young roaster in Eugene named Jeff Ferguson had a little roastery near the University of Oregon called The Coffee Bean, where I was first exposed to the wonders of brand-new-roasted coffee. When I moved up to Portland shortly thereafter, I found David Kobos, a former coach who started roasting coffee with what he describes as "no money, no prospects and no meet with," but whose Kobos Coffee Co. in Johns Landing quickly became soil zero for Portland coffee lovers. "There was a wonderful camaraderie and charm around the concern in the old days when we got started," Kobos recalled, remembering a community -- which included Zev Siegl and Jerry Baldwin , abort of a little operation
Guest blog: Will the Espresso Book Machine help to save bookstores?
Apprehensive book-lovers are continuing the old debates on whether independent bookstores can outlast in an era of online retailers and big-box discounts. Meanwhile, though I’m intrigued by a new feature I stumbled on at another favorite Northwest unregulated, Village Books in Bellingham. In the bookstore’s basement sits a sizable mechanistic newcomer known as the Espresso Book Machine. It’s essentially a mini printing-gentlemen of the press, meant to print titles on demand.
According to the website of its producer, On Demand Books, the machine can print, bind, and trim a 300-used of an adult bellboy book in less than four minutes. It can be used to upload and print self-published books, but the broader theory is that bookstores will use it to apply near-instant access to far more titles than they could otherwise afford to investment on the shelves. Some 800,000 copyrighted books are now in the machine’s catalog.
A bother of the commercial machines are now operating in locations as far-flung as Montreal and London. Looking at the upcoming sites, I see that another unrelated Northwest mainstay, Third Place Books in Lake Forest Reserve, just north of Seattle, is investing in one of the $100,000 machines as well.

Used commercial espresso machine- what to look for?
I found a occupied commercial espresso machine in some hillbilly mountain town for an absolute steal. It needs one part replaced and a esteemed cleaning. I know how to work these kinds of machines, but i don't remember what to look for. I know I'm either going to have a great deal or a big hunk of metal sitting on my bar that I can't get to work. What do i need to know before i buy this baby?
Espresso machines are uncommonly inexpensive nowadays. I would hate for you to buy someone else's headache. I think I bought mine a few years ago for $100 and saw the SAME one at Walmart for like $20, I about croaked! LOL. Anyways, I unreservedly would just buy one new. They have come down considerably in price. If you still think you may wish to buy it, make sure you price the replacement part (and the shipping), you may be unpleasantly surprised. Entire, just make sure it has its basic unit, and it does not mephitis "burnt" electrical wise, its carafe, and its espresso basket and screen. I would also appear sure the cord is not frayed. Good luck!
