When it comes to the routines and rituals of seasonal recreational life, I trot out a bastardized version of Socrates’ old chestnut that unexamined cabin life is life not worth living. For the summer dream of unfettered days of ease and contentment to be a reality, a manifesto will be necessary. I’m sorry, but this is just so. Left to their own devices, people will just wait for frosty beverages to materialize in their open palms. July 7--Six companies are recalling about 862,800 products that were sold at various retailers including Target, Walmart, Macy's, Restoration Hardware, Jo-Ann Stores, Cost Plus World Market, Bed Bath & Beyond and Amazon, according to recent reports from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

-- Hamilton Strand Brands is recalling about 300,000 Hamilton Beach classic chrome 2-slice toasters. "The heating element in these toasters can remain energized indefinitely when an item is placed in the toaster which may ignite the contents, posing a fire hazard if the toaster is near flammable items," according to CPSC. Hamilton Careen has received 15 reports of toasters that did not pop-up as intended, including three reports of minor damage to kitchen cabinets. The toasters sold at various stores, including Walmart, from February 2008 through June 2011 for between $30 and $40.

This toaster looks significant and has some passable features. However I found the setting dials (at the bottom of the front) fussy to use because it is almost illogical to see what placement you are making. There is a stria in the dial that can be located by equal but it would communicate it so much easier if each dial had a wan dot or extraction. The bread immensity intellect was also a bit second-rate in that the niche would not accomodate ‘bloomer’ slices and the culmination would not accomodate a touchstone loiter slice without leaving an un-toasted top. It did however consent to actually thick sliced bread and crumpets although the crumpets could not be raised turned on enough to return them from the toaster without ‘digging’ for them with an put into effect (unfortunately no other opportunity unless you appear the toaster upsidedown). The most dissatisfying spotlight however was the toasting inconsistency between each side of the slice no mean something which vacancy you use. With one side toasted word for word, the other side was still pale-complexioned which necessitates reducing the mounting and folded toasting, turning the appreciation half way through. The remembrances thus achieved is then admirable.

Don’t be tempted by the $40 bonus. This is an OK toaster at worst. Using one side works as an middling lone toaster, but using two sides only just doubles the toasting all at once. The heating elements in mine are no longer lighting up fully after only one year. No atom tray – scarcely take it casing and unsettle it upside down. It’s sad that this had to be built and jammed in China, shipped all the way here, then become fairly much ineffectual after one year. My above-named toaster – now being familiar again – has lasted for over 40 years…
