Turkey gets attention, but don't forget the pie

Effective, sure, down the spuds, gravy and sweet potatoes tomorrow.

It's all a prolegomenon to the best part of the day — the pie.

Homemade or Costco, mincemeat or huckleberry, topped with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, afters is as important as the stuffing.

Joyce Delk of Camano Key said her family loves “White Christmas Pie.”

“We mainly have it for Thanksgiving and Christmas,” Delk says. “It's at bottom yummy — coconut, cream and sugar with some almond get.”

Her son-in-law, David King from Bothell, decided he wanted to pamper it one year.

“He worked so hard, and the pie looked really mellifluous,” Delk said, “But we all gagged at the first sting.”

It seems King didn't know the difference between a small “t” and a top “T” on the recipe card.

“He put a whole tablespoon of almond quintessence in the pie.”

Function Junction adds a demonstration kitchen

R Junction doesn&rsquo;t want you to just <em>buy</em> its products. It also wants to clear sure you know how to <em>use</em> them.</p><p>So the Kansas City retailer has doubled the hugeness of its Crown Center store to add a Viking demonstration kitchen/steadfast-event space and expanded product lines.</p><p>On Saturday, the inventory held a &ldquo;Thanksgiving feast&rdquo; clarification &mdash; brining and roasting a turkey with side dishes such as sausage stuffing and cranberries. This Saturday, it plans to describe Heartland Bakeware, from Salina, Kan., by making cookies and cakes that visitors can chow down on with French entreat coffee and espresso.</p><p>&ldquo;We are relaunching the brand as a much broader, encompassing shopping experience,&rdquo; said Mary Merola, a break down of Function Junction who now has a new partner, Rebecca Wilkie. &ldquo;So if they buy a cuffs blender, we can take them right over to the kitchen and show them how to use it.&rdquo;</p><p>The new kitchen features dual cooktops, two-ply convection ovens, a steam oven, a warming drawer, two dishwashers and a larger refrigerator/freezer. Role Junction will now be able to hold vendor and chef demonstrations, cooking classes, specialized promotions and charitable events in the space. Cooking classes are scheduled to start in January.</p><p>The cooperative store also has added a laundry section with cute fabric shirk/frog/penguin children&rsquo;s clothing hampers; closet storage and organizational items; more dinnerware, barware, flatware and tiny kitchen appliances; bamboo cutting boards; children-sized kitchen utensils; overflow curtains; and recycled Melamine dinnerware.</p><p>Function Period was founded in Kansas City in 1977. At one time, it had 15 stores in the Kansas Diocese area, St. Louis, Springfield, Wichita and Omaha, Neb. Now it is concentrating on its Emperor Center store and Internet sales.</p><p>&ldquo;We&rsquo;re responding to as a matter of fact wonderful growth in the midtown/downtown area with a whole consumer base clamoring for our product,&rdquo; Merola said. &ldquo;We&rsquo;re in a part of the burgh that is blooming right now, and we are offering what they want to buy.&rdquo;</p><p>Merola&rsquo;s favorite kitchen items:</p><p>&bull;Viking scoff processor: &ldquo;I use it every day.&rdquo;</p><p>&bull;Peugeot U Restrictive: &ldquo;It has five different grinds for pepper or salt: I&rsquo;ve hand-me-down my Peugeot for 32 years, and it still has a perfect grind.&rdquo; </p><p>&bull;V-Prep Mandoline Slicer to slice or dice vegetables: &ldquo;It&rsquo;s the most adaptable tool in my kitchen.&rdquo;</p><p><strong><span class="subhead">Hankering&rsquo;s two</span></strong></p><p>Westport&rsquo;s former Dry&rsquo;s Cantina is making a comeback of sorts in the River Call.</p><p>Former employees of Dos Hombres plan to move across the street to 529 Walnut St. and reopen the sports bar, serving some Mexican victuals, sandwiches and appetizers.</p><p>&ldquo;We got the rights from Thirsty&rsquo;s founders, Jimmy Frantz&eacute; and R.J. Samuels,&rdquo; said Jim Sawyer, fellow/operator of the new Thirsty&rsquo;s. </p><p>A mid-December opening is planned.</p><p>Itching&rsquo;s opened in the early 1980s and closed in the mid-1990s to estimate way for what is now Panera Bread.</p><p>Vivace had the space before it became the Redhead Front room, an &ldquo;alternative bar,&rdquo; in January. Then it changed to River Market Sports Bar.</p><p>Meanwhile, a locally owned players, Corporate Restaurant Concepts Inc., has purchased the recipes and wise man rights to Dos Hombres. The last location recently closed in the River Furnish, but the new group hopes to open its first location in the former Dos Hombres break at 11134 Holmes Road in mid-December.
